It's time for a family room update! I have been slowly but surely decorating my wonderful French country cottage. It takes time & money to have things done and to find the little accessories that make a house a home. So here is a peek of my new red chair and my family room today.

I want to give a special thanks to my dear friend Lori of "Two Wild Roses", she is an antique dealer and a picker who seems to always have or find exactly what I'm looking for and beyond, my rooms would not be decorated the way they are without her wonderful help!

I have been thinking alot about Sue lately, wondering what she has been doing in her world of vintage inspired interior design. I have always felt a connecton with her and the way she styles a room, with just the right amount of aged and tattered cherished antiques, charming one of a kind accessories and always a touch of femininity, like floral fabrics, old rose paintings or vintage linens mixed in. Her designs have been such an inspiration not only to me but to multitudes of women who have followed and adored her style!

So after I got back from Arizona, my friend Lori and I promised ourselves to get up to L.A. (Venice Beach) and pay Sue and her shop "Bountiful Home" a visit. We loved every minute of it, chatting with Her and exploring her treasures!!! I Had Such an Amazing Time in Arizona at "Sweet Salvage"!

First of all a HUGE thank you to Kim & Katie and the team over at "Sweet Salvage on 7th"! I had the most wonderful experience being their guest at the "Romancing the Home" themed event last weekend. I met so many sweet friends and followers of my art who came there to meet me in person.I am still in awe of how busy their occassional sale got. As they opened the doors the line of customers outside came streaming in for at least 5 hours straight! All anxious to be the first to grab from the bounty of vintage treasure brought in by the hand selected "Sweet" dealers. After the first day came to a close and the store practically empty of its loot, they all pitched in to re-group the spaces and bring more things in for the following days to come.A pure buying frenzy!

Grisaille Painting Class with a Few of the TVM Girls!

I have been asked several times to do a class on my "underpaintings" or "Grisaille" which is a study in monochromatic color values. I use this method to design or build my compositions first before laying down the colors. The word Grisaille is French and gris means grey. I also do mine in sepia tones.

The "Girls" had a blast and so did I, it was good for me to share something I normally don't put much thought into. Here are some photos of our day! XO Christie

Designing a Painting

Most of the time my inspirations for a new painting don't just come from one source. There is always something I see that triggers the inspiration but then its up to me to research and explore that idea. I have a cork board in my art studio that I use to pin things that relate to my idea and then I use what's pinned to pull from as I'm designing the painting. It's pretty much like the ones used to decorate rooms only I use it for my art.

I try not to get to hung up on my design looking exactly like what I see in the photos, I'm learning to let the painting take on a life of its own.

Flea Market Shopping on New Years Day!!!

Yesterday I decided to go up to Pasadena with Sara and Abby of "Sweet Magnolias Farm", just to get out and enjoy the day with friends. Even though I wasn't planning on finding anything inparticular, I was so pleased to come home with quite a bit of vintage treasure, and for very little money!
The wicker desk and chair is in mint condition and perfect for my guest bedroom. The parasol and shawl are just what I need to add that little touch of bohemian romance to my booth for our March Show and I can always use the mirror and frames especially with bows on them for my business. The sweet pale lavender dress was the iceing on the cake!

Some take the first session with all the basic principles and go on their way and others have continued to come back for more. It Was Just "MAGICAL"!

Magical is the only way to describe the Vignettes holiday open house, we arrived there in the evening and the whole store was sparkling with a warm glow from all the chandeliers hanging and vintage rhinestones reflecting from each display. Lori your store is truly one -of- akind. In side we met quite a few of our friends shopping the fabulous rooms for french antiques and vintage treasures. We had such a great time! Well our December 2011 "Vintage Marketplace" is all said and done. We endured some pretty severe winds that came through our area, but I have to thank all the vendors for their great attitudes and despite the weather conditions they continued to put forth their "best efforts"! Also a huge THANKS to all the shoppers that continued to pour in each day, we appreciate you so much and you contributed to us having another successful show!

My Last Oil Painting of 2011

Although I love to paint in oil, and it's my favorite of all mediums, I don't seem to get as much time to compose as many as I would like with my busy schedule. Creating a painting to me is like writting a song or a poem, you start out with an inspiration but you never know exactly where it will take you before it's completed. and it usually takes on a life of its own. This year I have painted 7 new oil paintings, and this one is just in time to debut at our December Vintage Marketplace! XO Christie

I Took a Soldering Class with my SIL Rita!

My Obsession with French Floral Art

Although I have taken painting classes in college, I never really found a contemporary teacher that focused on painting flowers and roses with traditional principles and knowledge. So most of my rose painting path, I have been on a quest to find books filled with knowledge and images of those artists I admire most and can learn from. As most of you know I have an incredable love for French design and art history, I have gleaned so much from studying certain artists from French history and then applying what I've learned to my art today. I recently discovered a new book by Chantel Chirac, who gathered a collection of Aubusson cartoons from her native land of France and put them in a book for us to see and learn of the history, just fascinating! She is also opening a museum in her little village of Aubusson this coming summer. A visit to the museum is now a must for my bucket list! XO Christie

Inspiration From An Old Painting

You never know where inspiration will come from! And as most of you know, I'm getting ready for another show and with each show I'm always looking for new ideas to decorate my booth. The idea for the curtains in my booth came from a vintage painting I found on the internet, totally unexspected! The seed was planted. Then when I was out flea-market shopping I came across a pair of 1940's light pink with satin striped ribbon twin bedcovers and a vintage millinery hat with lots of roses on it, and then later on ebay I found cream polka-dot sheer yardage. So today was spent re-creating the inspiration from the painting," my way"! I have to say it turned out pretty girly, maybe I will use them in a bedroom after the show! XO Christie

Valerie's Re-Purposed Greenhouse - Shed!

This week I was invited over to one of my students homes here in Fallbrook CA. where I live. She had asked me several times to come see her beautiful victorian home. I finally got the chance to go over but what I was so charmed by ( although her home is quite beautiful!) was this little shed that they had so imaginitively built out of old windows, doors, shutters, fretwork, and a picket gate. So cute! Thank you Valerie for such a pleasant afternoon and especially for that homemade peach pie you sent me home with! XO Christie

I spent the day at Stampington & Co. the publisher of over 30 arts and crafts publications such as Somerset Home & Somerset Life. Beth Livesay, one of their editors took Rita and I on a tour. This company is amazing...the organization and what they go through to get your amazing creative projects published. As we walked around the on the tour we saw re-purposed jewelry, purses, altered clothing , scrapping, quilts. cards, aprons, and so many other items waiting to be photographed for one of their magazines Thank you Beth for an amazing day and lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and Rita for inviting me to come along.XO Christie

I Had This Crazy Idea Buzzing Around in My Head That Would Not Go Away!

So I just had to do it!
I had an old chair sitting in my garage that I bought last year to re-upholster for my home.Well I decided that it wasn't going to work for me after all, and its been sitting taking up space in the garage for quite a while. As I have been thinking of things to put artwork on for the next show, it hit me! What if I paint the whole chair, everything, the wood and the fabric? What do I have to loose? I got the vision to do oversized flowers on it, don't know why but I thought why not? something different and fun! So I began... it took 2 days to paint the whole thing creamy white, the fabric became like a canvas texture, and then another 2 days to do the artwork. I had so much fun doing this that I want to do another :) !!! XO Christie

Another Special Thank you For a Special Lady!

This "thank you" goes out to a very special lady named Patti. She has been buying my art for a while and just recently started coming to my rose painting classes. It has been so nice getting to know her a little better, not only as a customer and student but as a friend. After our last class together was over she wanted to let me know how much my new oil painting "Spring Bliss" meant to her and that she wanted to purchase the original. She said it represented all of her hopes and dreams of family life, and that the two eggs in the nest were symbolic of her children. I was so excited and shared with her that I had been praying about a very important business descision, and this purchase would give me the money needed to put towards it. Isn't it funny how things work out! So thankyou again sweet Patti, and I hope the painting brings you lots of peace and joy! XO Christie

I would Like To Give A "BIG" Thank You To 2 of My Favorite Magazines!

First of all I would like to say that I am so honored to be published, I am tickled and surprized each time there is an interest in me and my art!
So a big thanks goes out to Romantic Country who did a follow-up story on me and my move from the beach to the country and what new things I have got going on out in Fallbrook.

And Secondly as most of you know my SIL Rita Reade of Mammabellarte and I started a little Marketplace in my yard 1 1/2 years ago at my home in the country. It was started to give us and our friends a place to continue to sell our creative and vintage wares every 3 months and help boost our sales in a hard economy. Well , much to our surprize we outgrew my home the first year and moved our little show out to Rainbow just south of Temecula to a wonderful country park to let it grow. And boy is it growing!!!
So my next big "THANK YOU" goes to Romantic Homes magazine for including "The Vintage Marketplace" at "The Oaks" in there list of TOP 50 fleamarkets in the U.S.!!! We are #10 on the list in the California section.

My Daughter Just Got Her First Apt!

My daughter Cherise and I had such a fun day together hunting around for some bedding and accessories for her new apt. she has always loved brighter more vivid colors, allot like her personality, she is a very happy and vivacious girl!!! I'm so excited that she also picked my new bike painting "Dreaming of Summer" for over her bed. I can't wait to see it all put together in her room! I just Love living out here in the country and exploring new places! This time my SIL Rita organized a fun day trip to the Lavender Field farm in Valley Center about 20 minutes east of where I live in Fallbrook CA. Quite a few of our friends and fellow vendors from our show joined us for the field trip . This place is such a treat for the sences, lots of beauty to see and fragrance to smell! My SIL Rita and I were just blown away and overwhelmed with joy with all the people who came out to support "The Vintage Marketplace" at our new location "The Oaks" country park in Rainbow CA. We had a steady stream of shoppers all day long! Today for the second class, I am teaching a single rose on a canvas with a backround.I picked this design for it's simplicity of pattern and limited color palette. From such a simple composition there is a lot to learn! I will be excited to share photos of the Ladies progress!

I'm so thankful for the wonderful home I have. All though it's definitly a big work in progress (being a bank repo.and all) it has plenty of space for me to utilize for my art and my business. I just recently cleaned up the pool house ( which I was un-able to rent out, for some reason?) and turned it into my classroom where I just had my first rose painting class. I loved it ! it is the perfect size to fit 12 women. It's always amazing to me how good things fall into place. The first 12 women that came were so sweet and eager to learn. Their projects turned out better than I exspected being I loaded them down with lots of things to think about. Here are a few photos from that day. Bravo Ladies!!! XO, Christie

Today I am welcoming my first twelve students to my rose painting class. And this morning as I was looking through a book I have on french flower painters from the 1800's I stumbled across this quote by Redon.It's words have meant so much to me through the years " flowers should be forever fresh and soulful, born where the two rivers of image and memory meet. They are the very land of art, the good earth of reality harrowed and furrowed by the spirit." This is something I hope to pass along to each one who is on their journey to paint the rose. Farmhouse Labels for My Old Jars!

I'm so loving the rustic farmstyle inspiration with a touch of romance, of coarse!This week I spent the last 2 days designing these labels to embellish the old jars I find.The jars make great vases for roses and containers for candles, I also put wire handles on them. After the March show at my house, Rita and I decided we had out grown this location. So for the last 3 weeks we have feverishly been looking for a new home to move "The Vintage Marketplace" to.We finally locked into a wonderful rustic country park with room to add more vendors and plenty of parking space! It's called "The Oaks". Still in Fallbrook in a little area called Rainbow, 10 minutes south of Temecula, off the 15 fwy. Already located on the property is a fabulous restaurant (that people travel far and wide for), a country store, a charming little flower shop, a recycled salvage yard and even it's own little gas station. Anyway we are very excited to become a part of this family of venues. Here is our postcard for June . XO Christie

The Glitterfest Show in 3 Days!!! "Vintage Spring Garden"Theme

I only had barely a week to get ready for Glitterfest. And knowing what a fabulous show it is , I managed to push out a few new creations. My Theme is "Vintage Spring Garden", kinda spilling over from the Chateau De Fleurs Show , by the way it was the busiest show ever for us, and left me pretty wiped out! Thank God for His Blessings! My First Rose Painting Class Project

I had sign-ups at the "Vintage Marketplace" and much to my surprise I sold out of the first date Saturday April 30th. So I will be setting another date June 25th after my show . With this rose design I will be able to work with you on light hitting shapes, some shadowing, mixing and muting color and you can go home with a pretty sign!

Favorite Things in My Kitchen

Making Progress with my Living Room!

I just finished sewing the rose barkcloth drapes and throw pillows for the sofa and I would still like to paint the walls cream, but for now I have progressed to this point. I just love the vintage sheer ruffled priscilla curtains I recently found out antique shopping with my friend Lori Martin of Two Wild Roses. Now it's back to preparing for the March 4th & 5th Vintage Marketplace at my Studio and in my Yard. Check my website for more info!

   I have taken in all your feedback and I am letting it resinate in my heart and mind. And as I am doing that I have come to realize there are 2 types of classes to be taught. One is decorative painting where you paint a design on an object and the second is canvas painting or (fine art). Although I am rooted in decorative painting , my heart and mind loves the challenge of a good canvas painting.
   The knowledge is basically the same for both, only the first uses the object as the background and the second needs a background painted around it.
   So I am coming to some conclusions to start with:
#1 Putting together a self published book of designs/patterns with drawings to trace and paint in, with instructions on decorative painting.(for purchase on my website)
  #2 Having my studio open once a week (saturdays?) for painting on canvas workshops (art class) focusing on rose and floral still life.
#3 The second idea of an art class once a week could lead to the DVD idea.
#4 I will also consider women to come from afar for a weekend painting seminar as things evolve and I get my guest room finished.

I'm Thinking of Starting Up Painting Classes and I Need Your Input !

I have an extra space separate from my home that seems perfect for having painting classes. The space is a good size and has a small kitchen and a bathroom and is not being used at this time.
Before I completely decide to take a walk down this path, I was wondering if you might give me some feedback on the thought?
- What would you like to learn from me?(roses are a given)
- To do a canvas painting where I would have a still life of roses/flowers set up already where you could paint a painting in a day (like the Victorian ladies used to do)?

- For me to have a project and design organized and set up for you (or) for you to bring your own project for me to help you with?
-What day of the week would be best for you?

More Colorful for Our Spring Show!

Although I enjoy the serenity and simplicity of an all white and neutral palette in decorating, color makes me happy! So for Spring I have changed things around a bit and incorporated some of my vintage floral fabrics and focused on bringing in different greens and pinks. I have a month of layering yet to do but I'm headed for a cottage garden atmosphere with flowers and birds and romance! XO, Christie

My favorite time of the year is Spring and here is my first inspiration of the season. It was taken from a photo I had of an urn filled with Eden roses sitting on my kitchen table. Gifts Of The Season

I thought It would be fun to share some of the gifts I received during this Merry Christmas Season. Not only do I get to celebrate the birthday of our Savior, I also celebrate my own birthday! Here are a few of the special gifts I received. Italian lace and a handmade charm from my sweet sister-n-law Rita, a lovely lady porcelain duster from my dear friend Lori, and a few treasures I found during my holiday travels, vintage chocolate boxes, an old silver champagne holder and a wonderful antique french chair and ottoman which I had re-upholstered . I can't wait until each item finds it's special place in my home.

In between my art projects and keeping busy with all the shows I do, I have been managing to move along an inch at a time with my decorating. Last time I showed you my home I was contemplating upholstering a chair and hanging a chandelier that was sitting in a box. Well I managed to get the chair done a couple months ago, but the chandelier was still sitting in the box begging me to display it each time I passed by it. So, I finally decided to have it hung as a birthday present to me, so here it is in all it's glory!!!

Drawing With Paint

I'm starting to unwind from our last "Vintage Marketplace" and am thinking of doing a new oil painting.While scanning my photo's in my computer file for an image that has been on my mind, I found myself thinking about my under paintings or (the drawing under the painting) they at times can be very pretty in themselves.One of my Laguna Beach art teachers said that "drawing is the backbone to painting" a good drawing can make for a good painting. Using a neutral color trains you to see and paint in different values of dark to light. I remember 10 years ago when Rachel Ashwell came to visit me in my art studio and how she was drawn to an under painting I had just done, and asked to purchase it for her L.A. Shabby Chic store.I think she loved seeing the thought and design behind the finished painting. Anyway, here are a few examples of drawing with paint.

I feel like I need to post today. I have been extremely busy getting ready for the next Vintage Marketplace. There is always so much to do during the countdown days of our event , which happens to be this coming friday and sat. Dec.3rd and 4th. I am so excited and looking forward to all our vendors arriving to set up this coming week. But in between all the cleaning, yard work, paperwork, organizing, re-stocking etc...I have been working on painting a few rustic chippy items to add to my sweet framed roses. I Love White Wedding Cake!

I just got finished framing some new inventory for the Christmas Chateau de Fleurs Vintage Marketplace and when I stepped back to take the photo all I could think of was how much I love white wedding cake and how the ornateness of the frames looks like the decorative icing. I must have been craving something sweet! The next batch of roses will be framed in chippy, peely, old wood, I wonder what that will remind me of?
